Lets be honest. Many of the conditions we treat such as bowel incontinence or colon cancer aren’t topics that most like to discuss, and many feel embarrassed about which is why we do our best at Colon Surgeons of Charleston to give our patients the utmost respect and feeling of comfort in all instances.
One of the less comfortable topics we see in our office are Anal Warts. While it may not be something you want to discuss over dinner it is more prominent than you think, you are not alone.
Like the common wart, anal warts are caused by a virus, more specifically these warts are most often caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). It is important to know that anal warts are not only transmitted via anal intercourse.
If not removed anal warts can grow, multiply and lead to increased risk of cancer in the affected area. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes, “It is estimated that about 3,260 new cases of HPV-associated anal cancers are diagnosed in women and about 1,750 are diagnosed in men each year in the United States.”
While it may not be a comfortable topic to discuss, even with a medical professional, treatment is important for your health, and we will work with you to make the process as comfortable as possible. If you’ve noticed any new growths around your anus, itching, burning or discharge we can help- make an appointment with Dr. Margarita Murphy today.
