During the cooler months a little unexplained itching is easily attributed to dry skin or irritation, but sometimes your itching may be more than you expect. Pruritus Ani is a condition resulting in a compelling urge to scratch at the anal area.
Moisture due to perspiration or a small amount of residual stool around the anal area is commonly a factor. Pruritis ani may also be a symptom of other common anal conditions such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures. The initial condition can be made worse by scratching, vigorous cleansing of the area or overuse of topical treatments.
In some individuals pruritus ani may be caused by eating certain foods such as coffee and tea, carbonated beverages, dairy, tomatoes or nuts, smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages, especially beer and wine.
If your itch is becoming unbearable make an appointment to come see Dr. Margarita Murphy at Colon Surgeons of Charleston.
