  • Stress Less, Your Gut will Thank You~ Dr. Margarita Murphy

Aside from the extra sweets, alcohol and big meals messing with your stomach this season stress is more of a factor than many think. Stress wrecks havoc on your gut health and we all know it’s the season of joyful chaos.

Stress can cause or exacerbate symptoms of IBS (both constipation and diarrhea), Acid Reflux and Ulcers as well as cause a decreased level of healthy bacteria making you more prone to fatigue and illnesses.

Healthy gut bacteria is responsible for more than digestion including the production of serotonin, lowering the stress hormone cortisol and guarding our bodies from other unhealthy bacteria. Stress can also impact the blood flow to your gut, causing digestive problems.

It is also important to realize stress decreases your sleep, and sleep quality, can alter your eating patterns and increase blood pressure all of which have negative effects on your digestive and intestinal systems.

If you know you are one of the many that suffer from additional stress this time of year make sure to take time to rest, drink plenty of water, take a good quality probiotic and try to stay mindful of what you eat.

Those suffering from chronic high cortisol and stress levels come see us!
